#GuildChat for 07/24/15: Designing for Habit with Guest Julie Dirksen

Our next #GuildChat takes place Friday, July 24th at 11am PT / 2pm ET. Our topic for this week’s chat is Designing for Habit with guest Julie Dirksen.

Did you brush your teeth today?  More likely than not you did and you probably started the brush and moved around your mouth the same exact way you have for years. This is a habit, an automatic almost unconscious behavior of which some believe make up the greater part of our daily activities. Research in this area has been increasing in an effort to understand the make up of habits; triggers, routines and rewards and leverage their power for personal and organizational improvement. 2015-01-09_11-14-16

This week author and consultant Julie Dirksen (@usablelearning) joins us to look closer at habits, how to adopt new ones and change existing ones to improve performance. We’ll have the opportunity to discuss the habit cycle and strategies individuals and Instructional Designers can employ to leverage the power of these routines in the workplace.

Prospective questions:

Q1. Habits are unconscious activities made up of a cycle of a Cue-Routine-Reward. What is one of your personal or professional habit cycles? #GuildChat

Q2. What are some positive work habits you would want to acquire or have others acquire? #GuildChat

Q3. What are some negative workplace habits you would want to see change? #GuildChat

Q4. How have you gone about trying to change a habit? Were you successful? #GuildChat

Q5. What are the benefits to organizations when people have positive professional habits #GuildChat

Q6. Is continuous learning a habit? If not, how can it be made to be? #GuildChat

Q7. Can we help others develop or change workplace habits? If so what should we do? #GuildChat

2:40 PM billbollenbach @urbie true that! change is so fast… Has to be basic common sense human values #kindness #guildchat
2:40 PM tomspiglanin Agree @LnDDave about the Apple Watch. Interesting the new habits form naturally, then things feel wrong if you’re not wearing it #guildchat
2:40 PM LnDDave RT @eLearningGuild: Q6. Is continuous learning a habit? If not, how can it be made to be? #GuildChat
2:40 PM stuartkellynz @eLearningGuild #guildchat Can only become a habit, “natural” if it ultimately benefits you going forward. Practice makes perfect!
2:40 PM PatIngerick A6)  Absolutely!  Like any habit it must start with a conscious choice that provides reward.  Showing others the reward can help #GuildChat

2:41 PM britz RT @eLearningGuild: Q6. Is continuous learning a habit? If not, how can it be made to be? #GuildChat
2:41 PM LnDDave A6) I don’t think continuous learning is itself a habit; I think it’s more the combination of various habits. #GuildChat
2:41 PM tomspiglanin A6) I’m not sure I call continuous learning a habit as much as an attitude of always striving to do better, to excel, to learn #guildchat
2:41 PM urbie @billbollenbach Maybe for me the pendulum has swung too far the other way? I used to keep things close to my chest. No more. #GuildChat

2:43 PM tomspiglanin A6) Regardless, continuous learning is not signing up for courses, it’s learning from every opportunity #guildchat
2:43 PM urbie #GuildChat A6 Continuous (connected) learning should be a habit. Like most things (it seems) hitting a speed bump (job loss) kick-starts it.
2:43 PM DonaldClark A6 #GuildChat when learning becomes H-learning it no longer seems like ‘learning’ – it becomes invisible – I like that

2:43 PM stuartkellynz @tomspiglanin #guildchat I agree. Success is often a combination of doing a lot of little things really well and repetitively.
2:43 PM mariawidmer @urbie #GuildChat good Q! I also wonder how orgs can model that standard and help w habit building. Incentives? Carrot or stick?
2:43 PM MrMiNiKi A5 Do our positive habits exist more outside work? Do we struggle to practice them at work? If so, why is that? #guildchat

2:44 PM billbollenbach @LnDDave no doubt – humans are doing “continuous learning” – intentionality of it another story – comes through wholistic sense #guildchat
2:44 PM stuartkellynz @MrMiNiKi #guildchat Good q. Pressure to conform maybe? Ideally our habits are the same in and outside of school.
2:44 PM britz @LnDDave I agree it’s not habitual. However with the right mindset/meta-cognition one could make it automatic, deliberate  #guildchat
2:44 PM urbie #GuildChat A6 Seems like it’s always been let’s go to this external ($$$) conference. It took 1x to convince me.
2:44 PM MelMilloway A6 Learning is like exercising. We might walk to work, if we don’t run too then we won’t be as healthy. Must be intentional too #GuildChat
2:45 PM VNyamse A6) The effect of motivation (intrinsic or extrinsic) on learning should be considered when designing for continuous learning #GuildChat
