#GuildChat for 07/10/15: The Promise of Augmented and Virtual Reality for Learning

Our next #GuildChat takes place Friday, July 10th at 11am PT / 2pm ET. Our topic for this week’s chat is on the The Promise of Augmented and Virtual Reality for Learning.

There has been much talk and promise over the years with Augmented and Virtual Reality in the learning space.  From safe to fail immersive experiences to performance support solutions that enable non-experts to complete critical activities without training. Yet even with such innovation neither technology has set the corporate learning world afire. Cost, cumbersomeness, and even the uncanny valley have contributed to low adoption and experimentation in these areas.2015-01-09_11-14-16

Where is virtual and augmented reality today? Where is it working and what can learning learn from other applications of these technologies? This week we’ll take a real look at virtually all things that augment learning in this space :)

Prospective questions:

Q1. How do you describe AR and VR to others, how do you describe the differences? #GuildChat

Q2. What are some effective examples of either AR or VR for learning that you have seen? #GuildChat

Q3. Which technology, AR or VR, holds the greatest promise for learning? Why? #GuildChat

Q4. How might AR and/or VR help you learn/perform in your work environment? #GuildChat

Q5. What, besides cost, holds back VR and AR being used more for learning? #GuildChat

2:20 PM JD_Dillon A3) If you don’t have the knowledge/skill/resources to do VR well … #GuildChat  https://t.co/BfOwvzbqCC
2:20 PM LnDDave A3) VR for VR’s sake. #GuildChat
2:20 PM RaftLearning A3) I could see VR being cumbersome depending on the situation. Some things need to be more simple. #GuildChat
2:21 PM RaftLearning @LnDDave I really hate the “because-we-can” attitude. Look at the context first! #GuildChat
2:21 PM OhThatRachel @RaftLearning opposite problem, all my friends are gamers so I don’t need to explain to them! #GuildChat
2:21 PM RaftLearning @JD_Dillon Bad VR…ugh. #GuildChat

2:21 PM britz @OhThatRachel  i cant even imagine doing an Excel training period :) #guildchat
2:22 PM RaftLearning @DonaldClark I could never sell leadership on investing in the tech. #GuildChat
2:22 PM DonaldClark A3 #GuildChat the world is 3D, we perceive in 3D, so all elarning can be in 3D – we were just stuck in 2D

2:24 PM RaftLearning @britz @DonaldClark Medical field, which is where I am. But they’re stalled in the 1990s. I hold out hope, though. #GuildChat
2:24 PM MrMiNiKi A3) when used as the sole space for learning #guildchat
2:24 PM RaftLearning @OhThatRachel Oh sure, friends, but co-workers and organization leadership…not so much. #GuildChat
2:25 PM RaftLearning @MrMiNiKi Frustrating when people get stuck on one thing. It’s just one tool in the toolbox. #GuildChat
2:25 PM AlwaysBreaking a3) VR is like any other delivery tech. You can probably do any training in VR, if you design for it. But should you? #guildchat

2:27 PM marcshecter @RaftLearning I guess it depends on which part of the medical field one is in. see http://t.co/vEzfkf5n0K  #guildchat
2:27 PM JD_Dillon A4) Depends on context/need – both have potential in a larger L&D toolkit #GuildChat  https://t.co/4uiSx6PCkM
2:28 PM RaftLearning @AlwaysBreaking Again, sometimes simplicity is key. #GuildChat
2:29 PM OhThatRachel @DonaldClark yeah but just to learn the basics like sum()? Would be a bit much. #GuildChat
2:29 PM DonaldClark @marcshecter @RaftLearning #guildchat – completed a social care training programme – competence-led
2:29 PM JD_Dillon A4) AR appears to be more suited for performance support in context by nature #GuildChat
2:29 PM britz RT @JD_Dillon: A4) AR appears to be more suited for performance support in context by nature #GuildChat
2:30 PM AlwaysBreaking @RaftLearning Yep. Most of what I do is software focused, so I’d rather train in the actual software. #guildchat
2:30 PM LnDDave A4) An augmented overlay on reality that contextually supports performance is huge. #GuildChat
2:30 PM RaftLearning A4) AR I think is best. Augmenting the existing environment seems to me to be most directly applicable. #GuildChat
2:31 PM marcshecter @DonaldClark  do you have a link to the program? I’m curious about what it was like. #guildchat
2:31 PM britz @LnDDave that’s a mouthful :) #guildchat
2:31 PM RaftLearning @marcshecter We used simulation a lot in anesthesiology. Not so much in allergy/asthma/immunology. Less applicable, I guess. #GuildChat
2:31 PM OhThatRachel @JD_Dillon @eLearningGuild agree, context is very important here. #GuildChat
2:32 PM AlwaysBreaking A4) I see a ton of AR applications, especially in education. VR has uses, but dev costs are likely far greater. #guildchat
2:32 PM RaftLearning @JD_Dillon Yes! #GuildChat
2:32 PM JD_Dillon @LnDDave For some reason I wanna go fortune cookie on this answer and tag with “in bed” … :-) #GuildChat
2:32 PM OhThatRachel @LnDDave agree, and it’s much less obtrusive than VR. Kind of like how GIFs are raising in popularity over video. #GuildChat
2:32 PM RaftLearning @JD_Dillon @LnDDave LOL, JD! #GuildChat
2:33 PM DonaldClark A4 #guildchat VR v AR: the new Battle for reality -here’s a comparison – horses for courses http://t.co/B3rGsXb37J
2:34 PM LnDDave a4) We need to understand what it’s like to consume and engage in AR/VR to truly contextualize how to use it for learning. #GuildChat
2:34 PM eLearningGuild Q5. How might AR and/or VR help you learn in the workplace? #GuildChat
2:35 PM MrMiNiKi A4) I think the contest will be down to devices #GuildChat
2:35 PM RaftLearning A5) Agree with many re: performance support. AR could be a HUGE help. #GuildChat
2:36 PM JD_Dillon A5) Depends on my workplace – but feeding me info in moment of need based on location/view w/ AR #guildchat  https://t.co/rYdbtszZW8
2:36 PM RaftLearning A5) I don’t see VR being applicable to a lot of people for on-the-job training, though. #GuildChat
2:36 PM DonaldClark @OhThatRachel @LnDDave #guildchat – if obtrusive means absolute attention and belief I’m with VR
2:36 PM JD_Dillon A5) If VR can “take me there” I don’t have to come up w/ funds/logistics to actually “go there” #GuildChat  https://t.co/rYdbtszZW8
2:37 PM JD_Dillon A5) I honestly don’t have a good reason to deploy VR or AR in my current context – but never know moving forward #GuildChat
2:37 PM RaftLearning @JD_Dillon But that could require a MASSIVE network/tech situation. EXPENSIVE on its own. #GuildChat
2:37 PM MrMiNiKi A4) the contest might even be decided by wearables #GuildChat
2:37 PM DonaldClark @RaftLearning #guildchat exactly where it’s being used – think pilots and flight sims
2:38 PM britz A5 I can see a lot of manual jobs in particular where training cld be replaced by mobile AR performance support tools #guildchat
2:39 PM AlwaysBreaking a5) I already have Google, so I’m not sure how AR/VR will help with my workplace. I sit at a computer. #guildchat
2:39 PM LnDDave RT @eLearningGuild: Q5. How might AR and/or VR help you learn in the workplace? #GuildChat
2:39 PM RaftLearning @britz More directly relevant than traditional training, that’s for sure! #GuildChat

2:47 PM OhThatRachel @DonaldClark @LnDDave in the context of Dave’s tweet, it can be better to have something that doesn’t require all the setup. #GuildChat
2:48 PM urbie #guildchat A1 Augmented Reality is like an overlay on, well, reality. It adds something to the experience.
